How do we—and machines—design, see, and feel PV?

Abstract. As photovoltaics (PV) become part of the building façade, they are increasingly both an energy technology and an architectural material. This talk explores how façade PV is designed, seen, and experienced by both humans and machines. The design aspect of the talk focuses on the variety of PV façades designed by humans and AI for new façade designs. The second aspect, related to seeing PV, discusses whether PV is perceived by both humans and machines, i.e., AI models. Lastly, with the pressing impact of climate change, the talk focuses on the effects of façade PV on thermal comfort by presenting results from a real-world setup equipped with sensors to approximate human thermal comfort. The talk aims to provide varied views on designing, seeing, and feeling PV by humans and machines.
